First off, If you can't knock out a proper push up you shouldn't be worried about adding iron weights just yet. Body weight training will take you a far way! If you can easily do squats or push ups or any other Body weight exercise for that matter you can push it to the limit by slowing down your tempo or adding elevation, or by doing a single leg or arm exercise not to mention the hundreds of different core exercises!
An excellent first step towards resistance training would be start training with body weight! After all, You take these weights wherever you go in life.
